Reflection Blog of the Change-makers Presentation

     By: Leah Albertson

Hello, my name is Leah Albertson and I had the absolute most biggest pleasure to discuss my opinions on the Change makers presentation that took place last Thursday in our speech class. For this project, each group was given a specific century and we had to choose a change maker to present and talk about. Each presentation was about 30 minutes and one person was assigned and or chosen one change maker to talk about. It was interesting  to watch all of these presentations to see how they shaped our society today. If it weren't for these change makers, life would fall weak within our knowledge of science, earth, political worlds, economic values, equal right stances, entertainment and humanities. The people spoken about today really changed our world and that is why we respect them for ever and call them change makers. The groups all led their presentations well by letting me know absolutely everything this people did for the world to reconstruct modern society.

The first group I will be giving my opinions on was the first group from the 1700's. I enjoyed the intro, however, i would've liked to be introduced without an AI video. I would've chosen if it were me to have myself make a bold fun presented speech. The first change maker that stood out to me was John Locke. I enjoyed his ideas about natural rights and government influenced many of the founding principles through him for the United States. The presentation on Cyprus Attucks was also very fun to learn about mostly because I never understood what his role was and how important he was, especially leading up to the American Revolution.  George Washington was another important figure that was presented for the 1700's. He was Americas first president so of course, everyone in the United States knows how much he did for our country. I learned how his leadership established a new nation even when it was going through difficult times. Another student also spoke about James Madison, he was an important politic figure and he played a major role writing the constitution and the bill of rights. It was amazing to see how many people have freedoms tied into what he did and his work. Abigail Adams showed how she advocated for women's rights to have a greater voice in society when women barely had freedom and the presenter explained it well and thoroughly. The next change maker was about Benjamin Franklin. His accomplishments were some of the most important. His work as an inventor, scientist and politician all in one. Overall, I thought the 1700's did an exceptional job with choosing very interesting people, as well as organizing it well.

The second group was presenting about the 1800's which was my group. We organized our presentation with one poster for each person, which technically was one change maker. The presentation first started with me, I presented Charles Darwin and how his discovery of evolution came to be, and how he changed the world of our environmental views, scientific views and even medicinal views as well. I learned a lot about the other presentations from my group as well. Dorothea Dix was an extremely important figure in the 1800's and hearing about her improvements for people with mental health issues was fascinating. She also fought a lot for mental health intuitions and made them more reliable for people. Booker T. Washington also helped out a lot in the 1800's with beliefs that education should be provided to everyone, especially African Americans through the Tuskegee Institute and i enjoyed hearing about this. Susan B. Anthony, another change maker in our presentation was all very nice to hear about. She dedicated her entire life to women's equality and constantly fought for women's voting rights, she was an extremely strong feminist that definitely changed the world. Harriet Tubman was also especially inspiring in our group to hear about because she repeatedly risked her life helping enslaved people left and right through the Underground Railroad. The presentation on Nat Turner was also very interesting because it showed examples of how people resisted during slavery and the dangers and consequences they went through. What I liked most about the 1800's presentation was the design that we chose for teach poster, we made it in a way where it was like an 1800's newspaper, me and the professor loved the design.

The third group was about the 1900's. I was excited about their presentations because the 1900's is something that i like listening and researching about. Most of the change makers came from different backgrounds and careers, which made me excited. One of the most surprising set of change makers that was chosen was Hedy Lamarr. Before this presentation, I only really knew about her acting background, nothing else. But I learned she helped develop technology that later contributed to WiFi and wireless connections within modern society phones and other technological pieces, constructing today's community and even country. Audrey Hepburn was someone else that was presented with group three. The presentation not only hi lighted her successful acting career, shaping humanities as it is, but also her humanitarian work with helping children through UNICEF. One of my favorite change makers, Michael Jackson was also presented for the 1900's. I was super excited to listen to this one. He showed how only one person can change an entire industry, his influence on music, dance and entertainment is still greatly appreciated today. Martin Luther King Jr. was also one change maker that was extremely popular ad was presented about. Dr. King, his speeches changed the view of all discrimination towards African Americans. His leadership for the civil rights movement and peaceful protests were extremely historical and will always be remembered, especially his "I Have A Dream" Speech. Someone else that I look up to that was presented was Princess Diana. the presentation focused on her humanitarian efforts and how she used her platform to bring important issued such as homelessness and AIDS awareness, which I did not know she did at the time. Finally, the last presentation for the 1900's was Desmond Doss. He saved many people during World War II without carrying a weapon because of his religious beliefs, which i thought was extremely impressive. Overall group three presented extremely well and i was a big fan of the people they chose, especially Michael Jackson.
